Washington minimum car insurance requirements by ZIP
Washington drivers must show they can pay for damage they cause in a crash. Most people meet that obligation with liability auto insurance at least at the state minimum limits—often written as 25/50/10. Your premium still depends heavily on the ZIP where the car is parked, local claim patterns, and the limits you choose above the floor.

Washington liability minimums (25/50/10)
Under Washington law, RCW 46.29.090, minimum motor vehicle liability insurance is $25,000 because of bodily injury to or death of one person in any one accident and, subject to that one-person limit, $50,000 because of bodily injury to or death of two or more persons in any one accident, and $10,000 because of injury to or destruction of property of others in any one accident. That combination is commonly called 25/50/10. Liability pays for injuries and property damage you cause to others; it does not repair your own vehicle or pay your medical bills after an at-fault crash.
The Washington State Department of Licensing and the Office of the Insurance Commissioner state the same 25/50/10 liability floor. RCW 46.30.020 requires liability insurance at the RCW 46.29.090 amounts, or another form of financial responsibility the Department of Licensing accepts, before a person operates a vehicle that must be registered in Washington. Minimum limits can be exhausted quickly after a serious collision, especially when more than one person is injured. Shopping by ZIP helps you see which carriers offer quotes where the car is garaged, but the legal floor is the same statewide.
PIP and underinsured motorist coverage in Washington
Washington automobile liability policies must offer personal injury protection (PIP) as optional coverage under RCW 48.22.085. A named insured may reject PIP in writing. If it is rejected, the insurer does not have to include PIP on a renewal unless a named insured later requests it in writing. The minimum PIP offer in RCW 48.22.095 includes medical and hospital benefits of $10,000, plus funeral, income continuation, and loss of services benefits. PIP can help with certain medical costs regardless of fault, subject to the policy.
Under RCW 48.22.030, a policy for a vehicle registered or principally garaged in Washington includes underinsured motorist coverage unless a named insured or spouse rejects it in writing. Except for property damage, that coverage is issued in the same amount as the liability coverage unless the insured rejects all or part of it. If underinsured coverage was rejected, a renewal does not add it back unless a named insured or spouse requests it in writing. Washington’s definition of an underinsured motor vehicle includes a vehicle with no liability bond or policy, and a vehicle whose liability limits are less than the damages the covered person is legally entitled to recover.
Because rejection is allowed, two quotes with the same liability limits are not comparable if one includes PIP or underinsured motorist coverage and the other does not. When you compare by ZIP, keep those choices aligned across every option.
Why many Washington drivers buy above the minimum
Medical care and vehicle repair costs often exceed what 25/50/10 can pay. If you are at fault and limits run out, you may owe the remainder personally. Higher bodily injury limits, stronger property damage limits, and underinsured motorist limits kept in step with liability are common upgrades for drivers who want more predictable protection after a crash.
Lenders and lessors usually require collision and comprehensive coverage regardless of state minimums. Even if you own the car outright, collision and comprehensive cover damage to your own vehicle, which the liability minimum does not.
What changes the price in your Washington ZIP
Insurers use the garaging ZIP, driver history, vehicle type, annual mileage, and coverage selections when they price a policy. Local repair costs and claim patterns can differ between neighboring ZIP codes. Moving within Washington can change both liability and comprehensive pricing even though the legal minimum limits stay the same.
Discounts such as multi-vehicle, telematics, and defensive driving courses appear inconsistently across carriers. Document the limits and deductibles on each quote sheet so you can reproduce the comparison at renewal.

Frequently asked questions
Does Washington require PIP on every policy?
No. Insurers must offer personal injury protection, and a named insured may reject it in writing under RCW 48.22.085. Compare quotes with the same PIP choice.
Is underinsured motorist coverage mandatory in Washington?
A policy includes it unless a named insured or spouse rejects it in writing under RCW 48.22.030. Bodily injury underinsured coverage is issued at the same amount as liability coverage unless that rejection applies.
Will a Washington minimum policy cover my car after a crash I cause?
Not by itself. Minimum liability does not include collision coverage for your own vehicle.
Why compare by ZIP if minimum limits are statewide?
Minimum limits are fixed, but carrier prices and optional coverages are priced by territory. ZIP comparison shows who is competitive where you garage the vehicle.
